Jim White

In 1968 Jim attended his first Rotary meeting as a Junior Rotarian during his senior year of high school in Charlotte, Michigan.  His father was a Rotarian in this club, but as a high school student Jim didn’t really know much about Rotary.  Fast forward 34 years to 2002 when Jim was serving as the Interim Superintendent of Lowell Area Schools and was able to join the Lowell Rotary Club.

Following his retirement from the Lowell Area Schools, where he worked for 32 years as a teacher and administrator, Jim found the time to pursue additional volunteer activities that were always of interest to him.  He continues to work part time for Lowell Schools as an Energy Manager, looking for ways to reduce energy consumption and save the district money.  Over the past 40 years Jim has served as a chairperson on a number of boards, been selected as the Lowell Person of the Year, served as a presenter at state and national conferences, and more recently has enjoyed his 4, soon to be 5, grandchildren!

During the past nine years Jim served in various club leadership positions and was club   President in 2006-07.   He became interested in Rotary beyond the club level and joined the District’s inaugural Visioning Committee.  Having led many non-profits with strategic planning this was an easy way for Jim to share his skills with other clubs.  He is also a member of the District’s WCS committee, is currently finishing his third year as an Assistant Governor and is a multiple Paul Harris Fellow.

Jim’s Rotary points of pride include the yearly strategic planning retreats he leads for incoming boards in his club, chartering an Interact Club with 65 students in Lowell this year, moving his club to adopt the Club Leadership Plan during his presidency, and finding ways for his current AG clubs to work together in support of World Community Service projects.  In February 2010 Jim and his wife, Bobbie, while on a Rotary sponsored trip to the Dominican Republic, helped install water filters, assisted in a new house construction and helped at a local school. This was the experience which brought all of the talking and reading about international projects and Service Above Self to life for both of them.

Susan & Dennis Austin

I am a graduate of Scotia Glenville High School and the American Institute of Banking.  I retired in January of 2010 from the 1st National Bank of Scotia as a Vice President after 35 years of service.  My career focused on Bank Management, Security and Compliance.  I continue to work part time for the Center for Financial Training, where I have been teaching bankers since 1990.

I married my high school sweetheart, Dennis K. Austin in 1967.  We have two grown children and eight grandchildren.  We are fortunate they live within a few miles of us so we see them often.

Because of my belief in community service, I was invited to join the Saratoga Springs Rotary Club in 1990.   A job location change necessitated the change of clubs and in July of 2000 I joined the Schenectady East Rotary Club.

Involvement in my community has always been extremely important to me.   I was lucky to have served in several positions in Boy Scouts, Schenectady County Council, while my children were growing up, and in 1988 I was awarded the Boy Scouts of America’s National Silver Beaver Award.  Among my many volunteer activities I served as President of the Carver Community Center in Schenectady and Treasurer of several other local organizations.

I believe that Rotary offers us the opportunity to open doors.  I have seen how positive an influence Rotary can be and I am proud to be part of an organization that puts “Service Above Self”.
