Joe
Kovarik

|
When Joe graduated from St. Mary’s College (Winona, MN), his professional goal was clear: Be the best teacher of English ever. Pursuing that end, he managed a large English and Speech department in a suburban high school outside of Chicago—the place of his birth. While still living in the Windy City, he attained a Master of Arts degree from Loyola University (Chicago, IL).
"I moved to Minnesota,” says Joe, “to ostensibly teach in the then rapidly expanding Minnesota Community College System.” He taught at Normandale Community College and subsequently opened up the campus of Inver Hills Community College. “But the real reason for coming North,” adds Joe, “is my unproven sociological axiom that if you want to know where your soon-to-be-married son will live, find out where his wife-to-be is from.” Needless to say, his wife, Kathy, is from the St. Paul area.
Joe then traded up his administrative and instructional skills for a first-time position as Education Director in a substantial financial firm in St. Paul. Soon after, he became the Vice President of Personnel. An ensuing three-company merger enabled Joe to assume the charter role of Vice President of Education and Training. He says, “It was like being the Dean of the Business. Dollars and programs were plentiful for employees, officers and directors across a four-state area.”
However, a significant economic downturn forced the company to cut discretionary spending. The comprehensive Education and Training department was eliminated—functions and personnel gone. Joe was resilient, thinking “I’m not the victim of corporate downsizing, but the beneficiary of corporate right-sizing.” The “pink slip” enabled him to begin anew.
Joe’s next career step was his first experience with private consulting where he specialized in the unique field of “white-collar” productivity. At a Rotary meeting a couple of years later, a fellow Rotarian offered Joe a position as National Sales Manager for his manufacturing company. Though Joe enjoyed the cross-country travel to work with sales representatives in every major market, he yearned to return to the development of people.
Consequently, he began his independent consulting practice in “Sales and Management Performance Coaching” which has taken him to nearly every state in the “lower 48” and two provinces in Canada. Joe summarizes his return to a consultative teaching role as “similar to my first job, the difference is that the ‘students’ are a bit older and the nation’s the classroom.”
Joe’s initial exposure to Rotary International was in 1977 when he was recommended by the Rotary Club of St. Paul and selected by the District to be a member of the then-all male GSE Team to India. Two years later he joined Club #10. He has been actively involved at Club, District, and International levels ever since, including the gratification of being GSE Team Leader to the Philippines in 1999. He was Club 10 President in 2007-2008. Joe, too, is an inaugural member of the District 5960 Board of Directors.
He was the first person to join with PDG Steve Wilcox who was developing the Visioning Program for D5960 Clubs. Moreover, he has further assisted Steve since Visioning has branched out beyond USA borders. Joe has taught the how-to-visioning skills to facilitators in the United States, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia.
Joe is a multiple Paul Harris Fellow. With the St. Paul Rotary Foundation, he is an Elmer L. Andersen Fellow.
Joe and his wife, Kathy, who is an Elmer L. Andersen Fellow, reside outside the Capital city of St. Paul. They have two married children and 5 grandchildren living within 30 minutes.

Patricia
Merryweather-Arges
|
Pat is committed to the Rotary motto of Service Above Self and incorporates service into her every day life and activities. Pat immensely enjoys her time with Rotary as it is the best of all worlds in having fun, fellowship, and service combined into one organization.
Pat is a member of the Rotary Club of Naperville and joined after making a presentation at a Rotary Club meeting on a non-Rotary ambassadorial exchange on public health and hospitals in China shortly after 9-11. While Pat was in China, she found that the people in rural China were dying and ill due to poor public health infrastructure such as clean water, sanitation, and access to medical care. Frustrated by the inability to make a difference in the health conditions, Pat found Rotary International to be the perfect solution to addressing basic health needs and human development for people throughout the world.
Since Pat has been involved in Rotary, she has been to many developing countries working on water, solar energy, medical missions, and peace. Some of her most remarkable life experiences have been in working with people in communities where people live on less than a $1 per day and yet share that common bond of wanting the best for their children and to live in peace and harmony with others.
Pat has worked in health care policy and quality improvement for nearly three decades. She is currently the Executive Director of the Illinois Medicare Quality Improvement Organization after serving 26 years as the Senior Vice President of quality for the Illinois Hospital Association.
Pat and her husband George are the proud parents of four sons and a daughter-in-law and are expecting their first grandchild in September 2011. Two of their sons have served in the military overseas and one of their sons, Chris, is a Rotarian with the Rotary Club of Chicago Near-South and another son, Jason, recently relocated and is visiting Rotary Clubs in the hopes of joining one soon.
Pat is a major donor and is committed to the Rotary Foundation as she believes that it is the foundation for bringing peace and understanding to the world through its service projects, youth and ambassadorial exchanges, and peace programs.

Dale
Flinn
|
Dale joined the Ithaca (N.Y.) Rotary Club in 1990, proudly sponsored by his father, PDG David G. Flinn. He got to work immediately joining the Attendance committee and soon after became chair of the committee. A few years later, he was asked to help with the club's annual Pancake Day event and soon became co-chair where he and two other club members shepherded the club's biggest event for four years. In 2000, Dale applied to be the GSE team leader to D2450 and was chosen as the alternate. When the team leader decided he would be unable to take the time for the trip, Dale was given the lead of the team and spent five weeks in Bahrain, Jordan, and Egypt in the spring of 2001 with a great team of young professionals. Upon his return, Dale was asked to chair the district GSE committee and he served happily for three years. In his own club, Dale took on a regular job as newsletter editor and helped to change the club over from a printed and mailed weekly newsletter to a weekly e-newsletter. He continued to maintain and improve the delivery system until 2006 when the club started using ClubRunner and a new editor was found. Shortly after relinquishing the editorship, Dale served the club again as the chair of the Club Service committee. When the late PDG Bob Grantham was unable to travel to Africa on a Foundation Discovery Grant, Dale was asked by Bob to fill in for him on a trip to Ghana to investigate the completion of a Matching Grant that would ultimately deliver thousands of insecticide-treated mosquito nets to Ghana. It would also lead to a second trip to Ghana in 2006 on an Individual Grant to follow up on the delivery of two container-loads of hospital equipment to Korle Bu Hospital in Accra, Ghana.
In 2006, Dale was asked to serve as president of the Ithaca Rotary Club and, when the person ahead of him had to leave the club on short notice, stepped in a year early and served as president in 2007 -08. Directly after his term as president he was asked by PDG Lana Rouff to serve as an Assistant District Governor and in January of 2010, he was chosen to serve as District Governor for District 7170 in 2012-13. Perhaps his greatest Rotary accomplishment, though, was when his daughter joined the Baldwinsville, New York Rotary club, making her the third generation of Flinns to serve Rotary. Less than two years in she is already club secretary and playing important roles in the club's major fundraiser and her district's annual conference. Dale is looking forward to serving as District Governor! |
